M&S announces closure date of UK city store – ‘There is nothing left’ | UK | News

Marks & Spencer has confirmed the closure date for one of its flagship UK city centre stores – and it will shut its doors in less than a month. The move has been described locally as a major blow to the community.

M&S has said its historic Oxford Street store in Swansea will permanently close on May 30. Up to 92 staff members could be affected, with roles placed at risk when the decision was first announced in February.

The shop has been part of the city’s retail landscape for more than 69 years, opening its doors in 1957. M&S itself has operated in the Welsh city in some form since its Penny Bazaar stalls in 1902.

A spokesperson for the retailer said the site had been under pressure for some time and was no longer commercially viable.

Richard Owen, M&S regional manager, previously said: “The Swansea store has been a key part of the community for many decades.

“Unfortunately, it is not viable to keep the store open as the building faces practical and operational issues requiring significant investment, the store has underperformed over a long period and we must prioritise long-term growth decisions.”

The company says it still intends to maintain a presence in the city centre, although no firm plans for a replacement store have been confirmed.

Reaction from the public has been overwhelmingly negative, with many residents expressing frustration and disappointment at the loss.

One local said: “So disappointed with Marks & Spencer. Swansea has made a huge effort to increase footfall in the city and attract new retailers, and this is what M&S do!”

Another added: “It’s tragic, there is nothing left. So I hope a solution can be found.”

Once the store shuts, the nearest M&S Foodhall options for local shoppers will be at Fforestfach Retail Park or in Mumbles, meaning a noticeable step change in convenience for city centre customers.
