Nearly 6 Million French Press Coffee Makers Recalled for Burn Risk

One of the most popular brands of French press coffee makers is recalling nearly 6 million units of its products due to risk of “serious burn injury,” according to a notice from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Bodum is voluntarily recalling eight models of its French press coffee makers with replaceable glass carafes after the company identified 70 reports of the carafes breaking and almost 50 reports of people being burned while using them, the CPSC notice says.

“As a family-owned business, Bodum takes particular pride in making household products — including coffee and tea makers — that are both high quality and affordable, and we have used that formula to benefit millions of families worldwide for the past 72 years,” the company said in a statement.

“To maintain the trust and satisfaction of our customers, we pride ourselves in using high-quality materials and ensuring our products meet or exceed all relevant safety standards,” the statement continues.

The recall affects eight models of French press coffee makers with replaceable glass carafes, some of which have been on the market since 1974.

Here’s what to know about the Bodum French press recall.

Which Coffee Makers Are Being Recalled?

The recall specifically affects Bodum French press coffee makers, which have 8-cup and 12-cup replaceable glass carafes.

These models are included in the recall:

  • Bistro
  • Brazil
  • Caffettiera
  • Chambord
  • Crema
  • Java
  • Jesper
  • Kenya

The recalled coffee makers were in stores and online at Target, Walmart and many other home goods stores. They were sold from 1974 through October 2026 for prices between $15 and $65, according to the notice.

Why Are the Bodum Coffee Makers Being Recalled?

Bodum is voluntarily recalling its French press coffee makers after the company identified some issues with the glass carafes.

There have been 70 reports of the glass carafes breaking, during use, the CPSP notice says, including 48 reports of burns.

However, the recall is not related to a defect of the product, but rather with the way people use may use their coffee makers, as the glass can break down over time. Consumers should not be using metal utensils, such as spoons, inside the glass carafe, the CPSC notes, because that can lead to damage and breakage.

“This recall is an opportunity to reinforce warnings against using a cracked or damaged carafe and in particular, against using metal spoons to stir coffee in the glass carafe, which can damage the glass and lead to breakage during use,” Bodum said in its statement. “While the rate of reported incidents involving carafe breakage during use is extremely low, especially considering that Bodum has sold millions of these products in the U.S. for decades, this recall will further encourage the safe use of our French Press Coffee Makers.”

What to Do if You Have One of the Recalled Coffee Makers

If you have one of the recalled Bodum French Press coffee makers, you should stop using metal utensils to stir inside the glass carafe, the CPSC says.

Instead, contact the company to receive a free Bodum-designed plastic stirring spoon to use with the French press, the company said in a statement.

“Going forward, these products will be sold with the plastic stirring spoon and an additional warning label,” the statement continues. “As the North American market leader in this product category, Bodum is taking these additional actions to reinforce our instructions and warnings about the safe use of the product.”

The CPSC also notes that consumers should not use cracked or damaged glass carafes, adding that using metal utensils can lead to damage to the glass.
