A film that has been around for nearly six years has been awarded the crown for “most underrated movie of all time”, and it is now streaming on Amazon Prime. The podcast talkofthetownsends, a couple who discuss everything from classic films to new releases, conducted a poll among their listeners to find the most underrated movie of all time, and the result was very interesting.
Palm Springs is a 2020 science fiction/romantic comedy directed by Max Barbakow and written by Andy Siara.
The film stars Andy Samberg, Cristin Milioti and J. K. Simmons. It follows two people who meet at a wedding in Palm Springs and end up getting stuck in a time loop.
Palm Springs has an impressive 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the critics’ consensus stating: “Strong performances, assured direction, and a refreshingly original concept make Palm Springs a rom-com that’s easy to fall in love with.”
One critic wrote: “With a fast pace and a perfect balance of its tone, Palm Springs sets itself apart from the other movies of the genre, staying away from all of the cliches, formulas, and stereotypes associated with it. One of the best rom-coms I’ve ever seen.”
Another added: “Palm Springs is the perfect balance of hilarious comedy and insightful writing, and it does what all the best films should do – it makes us reflect on our own existence.”
“Palm Springs gives a fresh coat of paint to the oft-parodied plot of Groundhog Day with thought-provoking twists on that familiar formula,” said a third.
Audience members also enjoyed the film, which has been likened to Groundhog Day.
One said: “If I had to relive a day over and over again and again, I would watch Palm Springs with Cristin Milioti and Andy Samberg.”
“I love this movie. It was not a typical romantic comedy, but I love both leads – and the Groundhog Day shenanigans of flawed characters were fun,” added a second.
Another viewer wrote: “Palm Springs completely won me over. The way the characters are introduced feels effortless, and their progression unfolds at a really satisfying pace. The script is sharp and confident, with perfectly timed jokes that balance silliness and heart without ever dragging.”
To draw your own conclusion on the film, head to Amazon Prime, where you can stream it now.
