It was announced this weekend that Prince Harry will not be accompanied by his wife Meghan Markle and their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, during his highly anticipated five-day visit to the UK.
The last-minute decision followed the rejection by British authorities of a formal application for taxpayer-funded police protection during the London portion of the trip. While the family had initially intended to travel together – which would have represented the children’s first visit back to Harry’s homeland in four years – the Duke reduced his plans due to substantial security concerns.
Since Harry and Meghan withdrew from their duties as working royals in 2020, their automatic, publicly funded UK police protection was removed. Their security is now evaluated on a case-by-case basis by RAVEC (the Royal and VIP Executive Committee), which turned down their application for an armed police escort for this specific London visit.

While the palace itself was considered safe, Harry’s representatives rejected this as an adequate arrangement, maintaining that “risk follows the person, not the place”.
They emphasised that the instant the family steps outside royal premises to undertake public engagements, they would be left without sufficient protection. Prince Harry will arrive in London unaccompanied on Monday (July 6) to carry out a series of charity commitments.
These include an engagement supporting the Invictus Games at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, which Meghan had originally been expected to attend with him. He will also meet with his patronages, including Scotty’s Little Soldiers and WellChild.
While the family has completely ruled out travelling to London, their spokesperson confirmed they haven’t entirely dismissed the possibility of visiting other parts of Britain. There remains a slight possibility that Meghan and the children could travel straight to Birmingham under the protection of their private international security team later in the week.
Harry has engagements scheduled there on July 9 and 10 to promote the 2027 Birmingham Invictus Games.
Expressing their opinions on the matter on Reddit, numerous supporters endorsed Prince Harry’s decision, stating he’d done the ‘right thing’.

One exclaimed: “Great news, Harry has made the right choice for his family.”
While another agreed: “Yup, I’m so relieved.”
A third chimed in: “Completely agree, this is the right choice for his family.”
While a fourth added: “I expected this and I’m very happy with the decision, I think we all knew that Prince Harry would never put his family at risk not matter how much they want to be there to support him and the Invictus Games and athletes.”

This sudden alteration of arrangements has essentially destroyed prospects of a much-needed reunion between King Charles and his grandchildren. The King has not encountered Archie (7) or Lilibet (5) face-to-face since Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee in June 2022.
Sources indicate that while King Charles maintains a relatively amicable relationship with Harry and communicates with him regularly, the monarch has remained resolute, making it plain he will not personally intervene in decisions taken by the government-mandated security committee (RAVEC).
Those familiar with the Duke disclose that Harry remains “devastated” by the ongoing deadlock. He is extremely eager for his children to embrace their British heritage and to visit the grave of their late grandmother Princess Diana at Althorp, yet refuses to compromise their physical safety in order to achieve this.
