In a statement issued not long after England’s defeat, Prince William thanked the players and said the country is “proud” of them. He said: “Gutted. England, you gave it everything and we are all so proud of you. Thank you to everyone on and off the pitch, for an incredible tournament.”
The statement continued: “The fight and belief you have shown has inspired us all. The most complete England team in a tournament. Hold your heads high. W.”
The message was signed with a “W”, which means it is a personal message from the prince to the players and the England team. Prince William did not attend a match in person, however he is believed to have watched all the games from his Forest Lodge home with his family.
It is believed he had planned to fly out to watch the World Cup Final 2026 if England got through. This is not set to happen now England is out of the tournament.
Argentina are now through to the final on Sunday, which will see them play against Spain to attempt to be named as the World Cup 2026 winners.
England will play for third place in the tournament against France on Saturday.
Prince William is not expected to watch this game in person. As well as supporting England in international tournaments, William is known for being a strong Aston Villa fan. The Prince of Wales is often seen attending matches, cheering his team on from the Birmingham stands.
He has taken his eldest son Prince George, 12, along to a number of games, with George also being an Aston Villa supporter. Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, Prince William and Princess Catherine’s youngest children, are yet to be seen in the Aston Villa stands.
