Roger Federer will return to the US Open court this year for what is being described as a “once-in-a-lifetime exhibition”. The Swiss ace was a regular winner at Flushing Meadows during his playing days, having won five US Open titles.
He remains the only player – man or woman – to win five consecutive US Open titles, having done so between 2004 and 2008. Federer’s last appearance at the Flushing Meadows came in 2018, with his official retirement arriving in 2022.
Federer will make up part of a star-studded line-up taking part in the exhibition, with long-time rival Andy Roddick having also signed up. Meanwhile, fellow US Open icons and past winners Andre Agassi and John McEnroe will also be involved.
When quizzed on the event, the 20-time Grand Slam champion said: “The US Open has always been one of the most special tournaments for me. So many unforgettable moments of my career happened in New York, and Arthur Ashe Stadium is a place that means a great deal to me.
“I’ve missed being part of that atmosphere and feeling the incredible energy that the fans bring every year. To return to Arthur Ashe and share the evening with Andy, Andre and John makes it even more meaningful. I’m looking forward to celebrating those memories, seeing the fans again, and enjoying a very special night together.”
Whereas, the USTA’s chairman of the board, president and interim co-CEO, Brian Vahaly, commented: “It goes without saying that Roger Federer is one of the greatest champions to ever step onto a tennis court, and his legacy at the US Open will carry on for generations
“We’re thrilled to welcome him back for this unique and special event, giving fans an opportunity to celebrate Roger’s legacy and thank him for all he has meant to our sport.”
Federer is not only considered one of the best-ever tennis players, but also one of the greatest athletes of all time. The Basel-born star transcended sport and holds records that will most likely never be beaten, chief among them being his US Open five-peat.
Unsurprisingly, fans were ecstatic when the news was announced, with @AhmSheikhh writing on X: GOAT back for an exhibition match in US Open.”
@fednanen replied: “KING OF NEW YORK,” with a photo of all five US Open title wins.
And @MaesTro_RF added: “Nobody ever sold tickets more than RF. Arthur Ashe Stadium will be bunkers when he’s on court.”
