Three horses have died in two incidents that have seen the closure of all lanes on the A3 northbound just north of Guildford. The road is closed between A247 (Burntcommon) and the B2039 (Ockham) following a crash involving a large goods vehicle (LGV).
Surrey Police was called at around 1.40am to reports of two horses on the loose after they were involved with a collision with a lorry. A separate call then came in regarding an incident between a car and horse. Three horses were found dead at the scene and Highways England came to remove them from the road.
As a result, there are delays of around an hour against expected traffic. Drivers have been urged to avoid the area and use diversion routes.
National Highways told motorists to follow the solid diamond diversion symbol and leave at the Send (Burntcommon) interchange.
At the roundabout, use the 2nd exit and continue on the B2215 for approximately 2 miles, through Burntcommon/Ripley, until reaching the A3 Ockham interchange. At the roundabout, use the 1st exit to rejoin the A3 northbound.
The agency said in an update: “The A3 in Surrey is closed northbound between the A247 (Burntcommon) and the B2039 (Ockham) due to a serious collision.
“Emergency services including Surrey Police are in attendance. National Highways have deployed resources to assist with traffic management.”
The A3 is expected to reopen at 9.30am as debris is being cleared, but this is subject to change and could be pushed back.
Police enquiries are ongoing and officers are engaging with the drivers of both vehicles.
