Leading department store Selfridges has confirmed a major change across all its UK sites. The department store has boosted its hourly pay rate for shop floor workers to align with the London Living Wage.
Selfridges, which has four sites across the UK, has raised staff pay to £14.80 in London and £13.45 across the rest of the UK. The 6% increaase aligns with the Real Living Wage, and was implemented on April 1, coinciding with the Government’s increase to the National Minimum Wage, and National Living Wage.
The department chain is one of many retailers that have given their employees pay rises.
The John Lewis Partnership introduced a 6.9% pay rise for staff from April, increasing its minimum hourly salaries to £13.25 nationally and £14.80 within the M25.
In March, M&S also boosted pay for its shop floor workers by 6.4%. The retailer has invested more than £350m in colleague pay in the last four years and continues to offer a range of staff benefits, including a 20% discount across all M&S branded food and fashion, home and beauty products, a Sharesave scheme and pension contributions of up to 12% to help colleagues save for the future
Stuart Machin, M&S Chief Executive said: “Our store colleagues are at the heart of our business, welcoming and serving our customers every day and it is important that we invest in them and their pay. This is a good cost and I am pleased that we have been able to make this inflation beating pay award, alongside our leading package of benefits.
“This investment reflects the central role our people play as we reshape M&S for growth. As always I thank our colleagues for their continued hard work and commitment.”
