A British national has sadly died days after being left in critical condition following a devastating wildfire in Spain. Simon Batchelor and Lisa Fryett, from Canvey Island, were staying near Bédar and Los Gallardos in Spain when the blaze broke out last month, devouring thousands of acres of terrain.
The couple, who were staying near the villages when the wildfire started to spread, were rescued the day after the blaze erupted and were hospitalised in a critical condition. Since then, Ms Fryett has sadly died, according to an update on a GoFundMe page set up to support the family.
The Essex woman died on July 28, surrounded by her family who travelled to Spain to stay with her, EssexLive reports.
A post on the fundraiser says: “Our hearts are completely broken, and there are simply no words to describe the pain we are feeling. Lisa fought so incredibly hard, and we are so grateful that her loved ones were able to be by her side, surrounding her with love until the very end.
“We would like to thank every single person who has donated, shared our fundraiser, or kept our family in your thoughts and prayers. The love, kindness and generosity we have received have brought us comfort during the most devastating time of our lives.
“Thanks to your incredible support, our family has been able to remain together in Spain, allowing us to be by Lisa’s side when she needed us most. That is something we will be forever grateful for.”
More than £65,000 has been raised through the online fundraiser so far, with the funds now said to be used to give Lisa “the beautiful send off she truly deserves”, the GoFundMe page reads.
Mr Batchelor remains in hospital in a critical condition, the update suggests.
The fundraiser update added: “Please continue to keep Simon in your thoughts and prayers as he remains in critical condition. Our family is holding onto hope and taking each day as it comes, and your continued love, support and prayers mean the world to us.”
A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said: “We are supporting the family of a British woman who has died in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities.”
