Tom Cruise is unrecognisable in Oscar-worthy first look Digger trailer | Films | Entertainment

Over the last 20 years, Tom Cruise has pretty much exclusively focused on his action blockbusters, from Top Gun Maverick to the Mission Impossible movies. But now it looks like he’s aiming to finally win an Oscar with the first look at his new black comedy Digger.

Sporting a fat suit and hairpiece for this character role, just as he did for Tropic Thunder, the 64-year-old is unrecognisable once again in the title role as Digger Rockwell. Written by five-time Oscar-winning writer-director Alejandro G Iñarritu (Birdman, The Revenant), Digger looks set to spice up awards season and give The Odyssey and Dune: Part 3 a run for their money.

Boasting an impressive ensemble cast, Cruise is joined by Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Robert John Burke, Emma D’Arcy, Burn Gorman and Sophie Wilde.” The film’s official synopsis reads: “The most powerful man in the world embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s saviour before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything..”

Digger is out in UK cinemas on October 2, 2026.
