Tom Cruise returning for action sequel almost 40 years after original | Films | Entertainment

Tom Cruise and producer Jerry Bruckheimer had $1 billion success with Top Gun Maverick, arriving in cinemas almost 40 years after the original film. And now they’re doing it again with a sequel to 1990’s Days of Thunder.

The Top Gun Maverick team (director, producer, writer) repeated the success with Brad Pitt in F1 the Movie, so why not with Cruise and Bruckheimer’s NASCAR flick? Cruise is set to star as car driver Cole Trickle once again in Days of Thunder 2, in what is set to be the Hollywood star’s next movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jonathan Levine (Long Shot, Mr Irrelevant) is in talks to direct the sequel to the Tony Scott original. Meanwhile, Will Staples (Call of Duty 3, Without Remorse) is screenwriter. Nicole Kidman co-starred in the original as the love interest, but no word yet on if she’s reprising Dr Claire Lewicki. She famously met Cruise on set and was married to him for a decade before they divorced.
