UK seaside town hotel plunges into administration | UK | News

A long-closed seaside hotel in south Devon that was expected to reopen following refurbishment has reportedly now entered administration. According to a notice published by The Gazette, the UK’s official public record, administrators were appointed on June 5. Joint administrators have been appointed from Richard J Smith & Co, with Jonathan David Trembath and Samuel Adam Bailey overseeing the process from the firm’s Ivybridge office in Devon.

The Quayside Hotel, located on King Street and overlooking the harbour in Brixham, near Torquay, shut in late 2022 for refurbishment and a substantial upgrade of its rooms, dining areas and wider facilities. The hotel was meant to reopen last year marking a “new chapter” for the historic waterfront property.

However, the hotel never reopened and has now appointed administrators, BusinessLive reports. The hotel also had a bar and a restaurant.

On its website, the hotel previously wrote: “Perched on the hillside, our charismatic Quayside Hotel, dates back to the 18th century with unbroken views of Brixham harbour. Located in the centre of Brixham next to the beautiful harbourside and famous fishing town, it’s minutes from the beach and steps from the town centre.

“Here, at our Brixham hotel, you can discover some of Britain’s most beautiful South Devon beaches, stunning coastal walks along the English Riviera, award-winning food, four-poster beds, sea view rooms on request, free Wi-Fi, and live entertainment.

“What’s more, of all the hotels in Brixham, our Brixham hotel has one of the best, central locations nestled in the harbour where you can watch fishing trawlers bring in their day’s catch. Enjoy beautiful views from the Quayside Restaurant and Ernie Lister bar, then retire to your bedroom for a peaceful, uninterrupted night’s sleep.”

The hotel has 4.3-star rating on Google.

One person wrote about their stay at the hotel: “A lovely 3 night stay, comfortable bedroom overlooking the harbour, very friendly staff and excellent food, both breakfast and evening meal. A special mention to Jacqui and Earl where nothing was too much trouble. Thank you for making our stay so enjoyable. Can highly recommend! We will definitely return.”

Another added: “Lovely quirky place. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was amazing. Definitely will be coming again.”
