Snow is set to hammer large parts of the UK Towards the end of April, weather maps suggest, as bitterly cold weather makes an unwelcome return. With Spring now well and truly upon us millions of us, Britons will be looking forward to the longer sunnier days and finally putting away our boots and gloves.
However, it appears that winter is set to make a dramatic return towards the latter stages of April, with 26 counties across the country forecast to be hit by snow, weather maps show. The cold weather front will first smash into the country on April 28 at around 6pm, with North Yorkshire and Northumberland forecast to see up to 0.5cm of snow fall per hour. In Scotland, the Highlands could see snow depths hit 5cm while Perth and Kinross are likely to see 1cm of snow fall an hour. Fast forward 12 hours to 6am on April 29, when temperatures are expected to drop significantly. In Scotland, weather maps indicate temperatures could plunge to a bone chilling -3C in some areas.

The North West and North East could see the mercury hover between -2C and 1C. It will be around two degrees warmer in Wales, whilst London will see highs of 4C.
At midday, nearly the entirety of Scotland will be covered in a wall of snow, with parts of the country likely to see 1.5cm of snow per hour.
Cumbria will be the worst hit place with 1cm of snow likely to fall every hour.
Large swathes of the country look set to be covered in snow. Mid-Wales will be the worst hit, with up to 2cm of snow possible every hour. South Wales are forecast to see a light dusting of snow, and north Wales will see snow depths hit 5cm, the maps suggest.
Gloucestershire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Northamptonshire, Cambridgeshire are also all forecast to see snowfall. By 6pm, parts of the Scottish Highlands will see snow depths hit 6cm whilst in Perth and Kinross, snow depths will hit 5cm.

Newcastle will be covered in 1cm of snow as will mid and central Wales. Yorkshire and the Humber will also be covered in 1cm of snow.
The Met Office weather forecast for April 22 until May 1 reads: “High pressure is likely to remain centred to the north or northwest of the UK for much of this period amid slowly evolving weather patterns. This means overall, a fair amount of dry weather is expected though there will likely be some exceptions.
“Firstly, Atlantic frontal zones may graze over the southwest near the start of this period, bringing some rain and breezy conditions.
“The latter part of April may also see cold air sweep south across much or all of the UK for a time, bringing potential for wintry showers in the north and east and more widespread overnight frost.
“Any cold spell looks fairly likely to be short-lived before somewhat milder conditions become re-established.”
