It’s difficult to look ahead to Euro 2028 when the pain of England‘s heartbreaking World Cup exit remains so raw. Despite being just six minutes away from a place in the final, the Three Lions capitulated under pressure as Argentina scored two late goals to claim a famous victory. Thomas Tuchel was widely blamed for the result after making a number of defensive changes that proved to be disastrous.
England ended up with six defenders on the pitch, sitting in a 5-4-1 formation as Argentina unleashed wave after wave of attacks. They were obviously going to score and it came as little surprise when Enzo Fernandez equalised with just five minutes remaining. The goal failed to spark England into life and they were left shellshocked when Lautaro Martinez headed home a dramatic stoppage-time winner.
He was quick to defend his tactical approach after the final whistle, even claiming that England’s football culture was a deciding factor in the result.
Tuchel remains contracted until Euro 2028 and has already insisted that he will see out the remainder of his deal, which is reportedly worth around £5million per year.
However, many fans aren’t convinced and want him sacked. But who should England get in to replace him? Have your say in our poll below…
Pep Guardiola is already being lauded as England’s potential saviour, although there is no guarantee that he would be willing to manage the Three Lions.
He might not want to risk tarnishing his reputation by accepting a job where success is only measured by winning the World Cup, especially since no team has ever done it with a foreign head coach.
Eddie Howe is perhaps the standout English candidate, but his stock has fallen in recent months after overseeing Newcastle‘s disappointing end to the Premier League season.
Lee Carsley, Mauricio Pochettino, Frank Lampard and Graham Potter might be among the other names in the hat, but are any of those managers better than what England currently have?
