Why was Monaco Grand Prix result changed? Everything you need to know | F1 | Sport

The most chaotic Monaco Grand Prix in F1 history saw the result changed two hours later. Express Sport explains why…

  • Gasly loses podium: Pierre Gasly crossed the finish line in third but was dropped to seventh after receiving two penalties, worth 10 seconds in total, for exceeding the 60km/h pitlane speed limit by fractions of a kilometre.

  • Hadjar promoted: Isack Hadjar finished fourth on the road but was upgraded to third because of Gasly’s penalties. Stewards investigated Red Bull for breaching red-flag regulations, but ultimately cleared the team and let Hadjar keep his podium.

  • Alpine files a right of review: Insisting Gasly’s car settings were correct, Alpine requested an official review of the pitlane speeding penalties. If Alpine wins the appeal, Gasly could be reinstated into his third-place podium position.

  • Perez receives post-race penalty: Sergio Perez finished 10th on track but was handed a retrospective 10-second penalty, two hours after the race. Video evidence conclusively showed that his front right wheel was outside his assigned starting box during the race restart.

  • Cadillac lose a point: The post-race 10-second penalty dropped Perez from 10th to 15th place. As a result, Cadillac were stripped of what they initially thought was their first-ever F1 world championship point.

  • Aston Martin profit: Because Perez fell down the order to last among the finishers, Fernando Alonso was promoted into the final points-paying position of 10th, securing a point for Aston Martin.

  • Absolute chaos: Gasly was not alone in his pitlane struggles; George Russell, Oscar Piastri, Franco Colapinto and Lewis Hamilton were also penalised for pitlane breaches of just 0.1kph, with Russell’s race entirely ruined by a drive-through penalty for failing to serve the initial punishment properly.
