‘Best war film of all time’ is a ‘true masterpiece’ and on Amazon | Films | Entertainment

Black Hawk Down follows an elite force of American soldiers on a mission to obtain a Somalian warlord’s best lieutenants, but trouble ensues when they find themselves ambushed by a group of heavily-armed men instead.

The film’s synopsis reads: “The film takes place in 1993 when the U.S. sent special forces into Somalia to destabilise the corrupt government and bring food and humanitarian aid to the starving population. Using Black Hawk helicopters to lower the soldiers onto the ground, an unexpected attack by Somalian forces brings two of the helicopters down immediately. From there, the U.S. soldiers must struggle to regain their balance while enduring heavy gunfire.”

The action war drama was directed and produced by Ridley Scott, and it is based on a 1999 non-fiction book by journalist Mark Bowden that tells the story of a crew of a Black Hawk helicopter that was shot down during the Battle of Mogadishu.

The film’s stellar line-up includes Tom Hardy in his first film role, Ewan McGregor, Josh Hartnett, Eric Bana, Tom Sizemore, William Fichtner, Jason Isaacs, Sam Shepard, Jeremy Piven, Ioan Gruffudd, Ewen Bremner and Hugh Dancy.

Orlando Bloom, Ty Burrell and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau also feature in the movie.

The film has received much critical acclaim and was a hit at the box office.

The audience reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes have granted an 88% rating.

The verdict on the website reads: “Though it’s light on character development and cultural empathy, Black Hawk Down is a visceral, pulse-pounding portrait of war, elevated by Ridley Scott’s superb technical skill.”

Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film four stars out of four, saying that films like this “help audiences understand and sympathise with the actual experiences of combat troops, instead of trivialising them into entertainments.”

One viewer said: “Black Hawk Down delivers phenomenal acting and tells a gripping story with brutal realism that makes it difficult to watch at times—but that raw honesty is what makes the film so powerful. Its unflinching portrayal of war captures both the chaos and the brotherhood found within it. Overall, it stands as a favourite and a true masterpiece.”

While another wrote: “The best war movie ever created.”

Black Hawk Down is available to stream now on Amazon Prime.
