By John Cross in Atlanta.
NOTHING gets the crowd on its feet quite like a rousing rendition of Sweet Caroline.
The backing England receives from its supporters is extraordinary — and today it is nothing short of breathtaking, with what must be 80 per cent of the fans in the stadium.
The cost involved in making this trip is huge, yet the fans have arrived impeccably behaved and from all corners of the globe — England included, of course.
The typical England supporter has taken on a different complexion at this World Cup. There are notably more expats, families and perhaps a greater corporate presence than in previous tournaments.
That is understandable given the circumstances, but in Atlanta last night, the terraces were packed with devoted followers representing brilliant clubs such as Bradford, Brighton — the list goes on and on.
Every walk of life represented, which only highlights the extraordinary lengths fans from across the world have gone to in order to be here.
Truly remarkable.
