Leicester City midfielder Harry Winks was seen in a heated exchange with supporters following the Foxes’ most recent loss, which edged them closer to relegation from the Championship. Saturday saw Leicester take on Portsmouth in the early kick-off at Fratton Park, as the former Premier League side sought to improve their prospects of avoiding a drop to League One.
But Leicester suffered a 1-0 loss to Pompey, with substitute Ibane Bowat netting the sole goal of the match in the 63rd minute to inflict upon the Foxes their 18th defeat this season. Following the final whistle, video clips surfaced on social media showing Winks heading towards the Leicester team coach to travel home.
Winks tried to make his way onto the bus but was met by a barrage of angry supporters. He appeared to hit back as he turned around, seemingly taking offence with at least one comment.
The former Tottenham midfielder shouted back in an apparent defence of his team, despite their lowly standing in the table and the prospect of back-to-back relegations.
One fan could be heard shouting “see you Harry” and another appeared to swear at the 30-year-old, which saw Winks stop in his tracks and fire back on the steps of the bus.
The 10-cap England international shouted “you f*** off” and pointed at an individual, telling them to “shut up” before he was ushered away.
Leicester had been expected to bounce back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, but only Sheffield Wednesday sit below them in the table.
The Foxes could be relegated to League One as early as Tuesday if they draw or lose to Hull.
After defeat to Portsmouth, head coach Gary Rowett told talkSPORT: “I can say we’ve got belief. I think we have to show that in our performance and show that in our results.
“I said to the players, ‘We might have to start hoping we get a little bit of fortune from somewhere else,’ but I don’t like saying that as a manager, I’m not interested in what other teams do, I’m interested in what we do.
“We have to be professional, as a player, if I had three games to go and I was already relegated, I’d still want to win all three of those games, I don’t care, it’s about pride, it’s about your own personal standards.
“So for me, we turn up Tuesday and we have to do everything we can to try and win a game.”
