King Charles is officially celebrating his 77th birthday this weekend, and he’ll no doubt have his wife, Queen Camilla, by his side.
The monarch’s actual birthday was in November last year, but he will be officially celebrating the occasion on Saturday (13th June) with Trooping the Colour, which has marked the official birthday of the British monarch for over 260 years.
Charles’ birthday celebrations come amid a tough few years on the throne for the monarch, who took over after the passing of his mother, Queen Elizabeth, in 2022. The King has not only had to grieve for his mother and father, but also announced he had been diagnosed with cancer in 2024, and more recently has had to deal with stripping his brother, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, of his royal titles.
Through all these turbulent times, the one constant in King Charles’ life has been his wife, Queen Camilla, who has been a huge supporter of her husband ever since they tied the knot in 2005.
The 78-year-old Queen consort has been described in the past as being a “calming force” for her husband, with royal biographer Christopher Wilson, who studied the couple in the book A Greater Love, claiming that Camilla soothes Charles in a way that no one else can.
He said: “Her presence reassures him. Despite all the trappings of majesty, it’s cold and lonely at the top, and it’s easy to see the comfort she provides him.”
Camilla also helps to bring a little levity to royal responsibilities when appropriate, according to royal photographer Arthur Edwards, who previously said the Queen knows how to make her spouse “laugh”.
He explained: “She never lost her common touch. She makes him laugh. When something triggers them, you see them just laughing together. They do things with such enthusiasm.”
And body language expert Darren Stanton also previously spoke about the physical bond the couple share, claiming that it’s clear how dependent King Charles is on his wife.
He said: “They have the same passion for each other still to this day. During public events, Charles is often looking around and fidgeting when Camilla isn’t by his side, which shows how dependent he is on her. But when they are together, we see this genuine laughter shared between them with engaged eye contact, and this shows how they are on the same page emotionally.
“When he was a young Prince, we rarely saw him display a relaxed nature. Camilla brings that side out of him where he can be himself, let go and just enjoy his time as King.”
The Royal Family will step out together for one of the biggest events in the royal calendar this Saturday (June 13) when Trooping the Colour begins. Some members of the royal family will take part in the procession itself before the family then heads to Buckingham Palace, where they will step out onto the balcony to greet eager spectators.
So far, it’s anticipated that alongside the King and Queen, the Prince and Princess of Wales will also appear alongside their children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh are also expected to attend, as are Princess Anne and Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, and the Duke of Kent.
The line-up for the Trooping the Colour balcony appearance has remained the same since 2023, the King’s first as monarch.
