A major UK shoe retailer has closed its last stores in the country after more than 60 years on the high streets. Mostyn McKenzie has confirmed the closure of its last store in Perth, Scotland.
At the end of today, the store will shut permanently – leaving just hours for shoppers to grab a bargain. The store confirmed to The Sun that today will be its final day of in-store business. It was founded in 1966 and originally operated branches across the UK, including Edinburgh, Broughty Ferry, and Tenterden in Kent.
The shoe shop offers “a comprehensive selection of brands such as Gabor, Rieker, Josef Seibel and many more and specialise in offering comfort, quality and style”.
All other Mostyn McKenzie stores have already closed. In 2023, the business even shut its flagship Aberdeen store.
The decision to close was taken due to rising costs, said managing director Graeme McKenzie. Speaking to The Courier, he said: “High street retail has become increasingly difficult.”
He added: “Costs have increased, shopping habits have changed, we’re finding footfall in Perth has dropped considerably, and our costs have just increased.”
He also said that the store had never really recovered from Covid.
Mostyn McKenzie launched a clearance sale on all online stock, with up to 70% off items.
On its website, it says: “We are proud of the high standards of service we provide to our customers. Over the years we have built up a loyal customer base from all over Scotland and beyond.
“Striving to provide quality, value for money, comfort and style for our customers is our top priority. We hope you enjoy your experience with us.”
On its Facebook page, the most recent post is from January 16, when the brand announced the closure of its Broughty Ferry store.
It reads: “Sadly after 25 years in Broughty Ferry Mostyn McKenzie is closing down, our last day being 31st January. Up until then we are having a massive sale with up to 50 % off all stock Literally everything must go!!! Come and browse for the last chance to grab yourself a bargain. We would like to take this opportunity to personally thank the wonderful people of Broughty Ferry who have supported the business over the years.”
