The Met Office has issued a yellow thunderstorm warning for 46 areas on Saturday as heavy rain is forecast. The alert is in place from 12am on Friday until 3am on Saturday for places in Central, Tayside and Fife, Grampian, Highlands and Eilean Siar, Orkney and Shetland, Southwest Scotland and Lothian Borders, and Strathclyde.
There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds, the Met Office warned. It added: “Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.
“Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures. There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads.
“There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.”
The band of wintry weather appears to be moving in an easterly direction, affecting the UK’s west coast as it drenches the country.
