A briefing paper doing the rounds in Westminster makes clear that the allegations the Prime Minister is facing are not “frivolous”, but what are they? Whilst Sir Keir is keen to stress that the “vast majority” of his MPs still back him – a vote could put the belief to the test.
But what accusations is he facing?
Sir Keir repeatedly insisted that “due process” was followed over sending Lord Mandelson to Washington. His critics say that is open to debate, as the cabinet secretary at the time, Simon Case, advised that security vetting should be carried out before giving the plum job to a political appointee.Sir Keir also told MP’s at PMQs that “no pressure existed whatsoever” when it came to getting the appointment through quickly. He claimed he did not put pressure on the foreign office, a claim contradicted by ex FCDO boss Olly Robbins, who said there had been “constant pressure” and an “atmosphere of constant chasing.”
