Prince Harry has said he did not like his mother, the late Princess of Wales, being referred to as a princess for one major reason. The royal was just 12-years-old when Diana died following injuries she sustained from a car accident in 1997, with his brother, Prince William, aged just 15 at the time.
In Spare, which was released in early 2023, Harry shared details about his late mother, with him also revealing how he felt about her title. He shared how he viewed it as “weak” adding that it felt “inadequate”.
Harry wrote: “Although my mother was a princess, named after a goddess, both those terms always felt weak, inadequate.
“People routinely compared her to icons and saints, from Nelson Mandela to Mother Teresa to Joan of Arc, but every such comparison, while lofty and loving, also felt wide of the mark.
“The most recognizable woman on the planet, one of the most beloved, my mother was simply indescribable, that was the plain truth.”
Diana held the Princess of Wales title from the day she married the now-King Charles in 1981, up until her death aged 36.
Following her death, the title went unused until Princess Catherine was bestowed the title in 2022, after the death of the late Queen Elizabeth II.
Since Harry’s comment, Harry’s daughter, five-year-old Lilibet, has become known by her princess title.
Harry’s children – including son Archie – were not granted the princess and prince titles upon their births in 2019 and 2021.
The young royals have only been known by their titles since their paternal grandfather, King Charles, ascended the throne in 2022.
