Scottie Scheffler explodes at caddie whose ‘ears will be bleeding’ | Golf | Sport

Scottie Scheffler was spotted remonstrating with long-standing caddie and mentor Ted Scott during a frustrating final round at the Miami Championship. The world No. 1 had to settle for second place at President Donald Trump’s ‘Blue Monster’ course.

He was left trailing eventual winner Cameron Young by a considerable margin, with the American finishing six strokes clear of his Ryder Cup team-mate on 19-under par. It marked the third successive tournament in which Scheffler had been forced to settle for the runner-up spot.

He narrowly missed out on the RBC Heritage Classic after falling to Matt Fitzpatrick in a play-off, and was also pipped to the post by Rory McIlroy at the Masters.

The mounting frustration of three consecutive second-place finishes appeared to get the better of Scheffler in Miami, with Scott bearing the brunt, having stood alongside the World No. 1 since linking up with him in 2021.

On the ninth hole of the final round, Scheffler faced what appeared to be a straightforward tap-in for par. However, he misjudged the slope and missed by the narrowest of margins.

After reluctantly nudging the ball into the hole from just a few centimetres away to record a bogey, he was observed turning to Scott and venting directly into the veteran caddie’s ear.

As Scheffler made his feelings known regarding his mentor’s advice on that putt, a Sky Sports commentator remarked: “He has just about had enough of these greens.

“He’s simply out of answers. Only birdies coming I’m sure are tap-ins at the par fives today. Ted Scott’s ears may be bleeding at the end of the day.”

While Scheffler was far from pleased with his own performance, he was delighted for fellow American Young, who stormed to victory in dominant fashion. Scheffler said: “I’ve always been very impressed with Cam’s game.

“Every time I played with him throughout – I mean, I’ve known him a long time. Every time I’ve played with him I’ve always been impressed with his game.

“This week he hit a lot of quality shot. A lot of quality iron shots, quality tee shots, especially on the holes where it really matters. There are some tee shots out here that are really difficult and he stepped up and hit the shots.

“On the greens he was unbelievable this week. First 27 holes I don’t think he missed anything really. It was nuts. Guy was just holing everything. When you’re hitting really good shots and holing a lot of putts that’s a recipe to run away with a golf tournament.”
