The White House released a provocative cartoon on Wednesday, cautioning Greenlanders that rejecting the Trump administration’s bid to acquire the strategically important island could leave them vulnerable to Russian and Chinese influence.
The illustration showed two dog sleds travelling down diverging routes: one headed towards the American flag, positioned in a bright, welcoming environment, whilst the other moved towards a sinister, shadowy region marked by Russian and Chinese flags , depicted in a threatening style.
“Which way, Greenland man?” the meme’s caption asked, seemingly presenting the United States as the obvious choice for Greenland’s destiny.
The graphic emerges as the Trump administration intensifies efforts to secure Greenland, arguing it’s essential for national security purposes and would prevent Beijing and Moscow from establishing a foothold there.
Following reports of Denmark dispatching military personnel to Greenland on Wednesday, President Trump used his Truth Social platform to reinforce his position on the territory, whilst also issuing a warning to NATO.
“The United States needs Greenland for the purpose of National Security,” Trump wrote on Wednesday morning. “It is vital for the Golden Dome that we are building. NATO should be leading the way for us to get it. IF WE DON’T, RUSSIA OR CHINA WILL, AND THAT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!
“NATO becomes far more formidable and effective with Greenland in the hands of the UNITED STATES,” Trump added.
“Anything less than that is unacceptable.”
In a similar vein, during a New York Times interview published last week, the president insisted he must have full ownership of the territory, rather than simply relying on the existing treaty which grants the U.S. extensive rights to establish military installations on Greenland.
“I think that ownership gives you a thing that you can’t do with, you’re talking about a lease or a treaty,” Trump said in the interview. “Ownership gives you things and elements that you can’t get from just signing a document.”
In earlier remarks, Trump has also issued veiled threats towards the nation, stating, “If we don’t do it the easy way, we’re going to do it the hard way,” whilst declining to elaborate on what such action might involve.
Nevertheless, both Danish and Greenlandic officials have firmly declared that the island is not up for sale.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Tuesday, Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen made clear his country would prioritise NATO and the European Union ahead of the U.S..
“If we have to choose between the United States and Denmark, we choose Denmark,” Nielsen said. “We choose NATO, we choose the Kingdom of Denmark, we choose the EU.”
He emphasised that when presented with the option, Greenland will categorically opt to remain an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. “One thing must be clear to everyone: Greenland does not want to be owned by the U.S.,” the Greenland prime minister said.
“Greenland does not want to be governed by the U.S., Greenland does not want to be part of the U.S.
“We choose the Greenland we know today, which is a part of the Kingdom of Denmark.”
Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are due to meet the Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers at the White House on Wednesday. The discussions are expected to centre on de-escalating tensions and identifying a resolution that addresses the Trump administration’s concerns.
