UK car dealership issues update to customers as it closes today | UK | News

An iconic UK car dealership has closed its doors for the last time, letting go of hundreds of staff members. Cargiant will operate a winding-down retail operation over the coming weeks to sell off the rest of its stock on its 46-acre West London site. The dealership, which had operated for around 50 years, reportedly employed around 500 people. The majority of them have now been made redundant as a result of today’s closure.

It said last year that it was considering either a full sale of the business or the land it was based on, which was valued at around £98.8 million in 2025. However, in an announcement made two weeks ago, Cargiant said that the “business is no longer commercially sustainable in its current form”. It listed a number of reasons for this being the case, including the EV mandate, rising operating costs and complexities within the used car market. It was once the largest second-hand car dealership in the world and the most profitable in the UK.

A Cargiant spokesperson said: “We would like to express our sincere thanks to all our staff, past and present, as well as our customers, partners, and suppliers, for their loyalty and support over many years.

“Our after-sales operation, including an office support team, will continue beyond the closure of retail activity to support customers and ensure that existing commitments are properly fulfilled.”

At its peak, the business had more than 5,000 used cars on sale. It became famous among car enthusiasts around the world as it made its way into the Guinness Book of World Records in 2007 as the “world’s largest car dealership”.

It is speculated that the land on which the dealership sits will be sold off for redevelopment.

It has a 3.9 out of 5 score on Google, based on more than 10,000 customer reviews. One person recently wrote: “I visited Car Giant around two weeks ago and honestly, everything was amazing. The whole experience—from the wide range of cars to the super helpful and professional staff—was flawless. The process was smooth, fast, and stress-free. I was really impressed by how well-organised everything was. Definitely the best place in London if you’re looking to buy a used car!”

Another shared: “Great variety of cars available and something to suit almost all budgets. Superb range and the service is exceptionally good. Within 24 hours, you can drive away with your car. Awesome that there is also drive-away insurance you can take out to get you home if you’ve not already got insurance in place.”

Cargiant was founded 50 years ago by billionaire Geoffrey Warren. A skeleton staff have been kept on to deal with aftersales before the business is wound up.
