UK shopping centre to close next month after 52 years | UK | News

A UK shopping centre is set to close next month after the last major retailer confirmed it would be shutting its doors.

Broadwalk Shopping Centre first opened in 1974. At the time, it was both the first and largest retail venue in Bristol.

Plans to demolish the site, alongside the multi-storey car park, bingo venue and snooker hall, are now set to proceed, according to reports.

The Superdrug branch was the last major retailer operating within the centre after the Iceland supermarket shut in January.

Saturday, July 11 will be the last trading day for the Superdrug branch.

Staff at the branch confirmed the closure and thanked customers.

Customers of the pharmacy have been told that all patient details will be transferred to Knowle Pharmacy, which is located just a few doors down on the Wells Road, after the closure.

Redcatch Quarter, the owner of the shopping centre, has said that demolition of the entire site is set to begin later this year, Bristol Live reports.

Security for the site will be increased due to concerns about break-ins, theft and anti-social behaviour prior to the demolition.

The development site encompasses a vast area from the Wells Road to Redcatch Park and were unveiled in 2018 for the transformation of the shopping site into flats.

Plans initially proposed 850 flats in ten-storey blocks by the park, but this was challenged by residents.

The decision was instead taken to create smaller-scale tower blocks on the Wells Road, with townhouses located near Redcatch Park.
