Weather forecasting maps indicate as many as 27 cities throughout the UK could witness snow imminently this month.
The GFS weather model reveals flurries initially descending across the Midlands, north-west England and northern Scotland at approximately 6am on 26 April. Birmingham features amongst the cities potentially experiencing some flakes during the opening cold spell.
By 9am, the maps reveal snow spreading quite extensively across the UK, affecting areas immediately north of London alongside Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland’s furthest reaches. Sections of Yorkshire may also encounter snow around this period.
Maps for approximately midday on 26 April depict snow falling right across northern England, the Midlands, a substantial portion of Wales and most of Scotland. Liverpool and Manchester are anticipated to be in the firing line around this juncture.
And on 27 April at roughly 9am, maps display nearly all of Wales blanketed in snow, while the heaviest flurries are forecast across Scotland’s far north and northern England. In total, the maps indicate 27 cities could witness snow throughout this timeframe.
Fortunately, the data suggests snow accumulations won’t exceed 1cm across most of the country. In fact, substantial snow is only anticipated in the Scottish hills where six inches is forecast.
The Met Office expects temperatures to generally remain on the warm side later this month. However, the national weather service also warns “unsettled” conditions are expected. The Met Office forecast for April 19 to 28 states: “A few showers around at the start of the period, mainly affecting the far northeast of the UK. For many though Sunday should be fine and dry with spells of warm sunshine.
“Into the following week fronts associated with another Atlantic low will try to push into the UK, but may struggle to make inroads against an area of high pressure to the northeast and are likely to be held at bay.
“So for much of next week plenty of dry weather with sunny spells. Some east coasts could be on the chilly side, but further west temperatures likely feeling quite warm. Toward next weekend and beyond likely turning more unsettled with a return of some rain or showers for many.”
