One year ago today, Prince Harry gave one of the most memorable interviews of his life. Not the Oprah Winfrey exposé with his wife, Meghan Markle, but rather the interview with the BBC after he lost his landmark legal case for security protections in the UK.

He was fighting to reestablish automatic royal-level security for himself and his family whenever they visit the UK, which is afforded to the most senior royals — a right he lost when he stepped away from royal duties and exited the UK to live in California with his wife. The Court of Appeal rejected his challenge to the High Court’s decision, meaning his security needs will be assessed every time he visits the UK.

In an emotional interview with the BBC‘s Nada Tawfik, in the aftermath of the May 2025 ruling, Harry revealed how he really felt about the establishment and his father, King Charles. Here are five of the most explosive comments.

Prince Harry and King Charles were not speaking

Prince Harry claimed he was “cut off” from his father King Charles, who the Duke said “won’t speak” to him because of “this security stuff”. He also claimed the King could have helped resolve his security grievances.

The Duke told the BBC: “There is a lot of control and ability in my father’s hands. Ultimately this whole thing could be resolved through him, not necessarily by intervening but by stepping aside and letting the experts do what is necessary.”

This year, speculation has been circulating that a reconcilliation may be on the cards, with rumours that King Charles will be invited to the Invictus Games in Birmingham next year.

Prince Harry wanted reconciliation

The Duke of Sussex said he wants reconciliation with his family, and that there was “no point in continuing to fight anymore”. However, he acknowledged that some members of his family would never forgive him for writing a book, or for “lots of things” over the years.

He told the BBC: “There have been so many disagreements, differences between me and some of my family. This current situation, which has been ongoing for five years in regard to human life and safety, is the sticking point.”

Prince Harry unlikely to bring family to the UK

Prince Harry said he “can’t see a world” in which he would bring his family back to the UK without the security arrangements, including his children, Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four. Meghan Markle last visited the UK in 2022 for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.

Harry said: “I think it’s really quite sad that I won’t be able to show my children my homeland.”

Prince Harry claimed security was engineered to keep him in UK

The Duke claimed that his security rights were reduced in 2020 to encourage him and his wife, Meghan Markle, to stay in the UK.

He said: “Everybody knew that they were putting us at risk in 2020 and they hoped that me knowing that risk would force us to come back. But then when you realise that didn’t work, do you not want to keep us safe?

“Whether you’re the government, the Royal Household, whether you’re my dad, my family – despite all of our differences, do you not want to just ensure our safety?

Security used to ‘control’ and ‘imprison’ royals

Prince Harry claimed that his situation revealed how the royal security rights can be used to control a person’s movements.

He told the BBC: “It’s set a new precedent that security can be used to control members of the family and effectvely what it does is imprison other members of the family from being able to choose a different life.”
