Beefeater has confirmed the closure date for all 106 of its restaurants in a move that puts 3,800 jobs at risk. The eatery, which serves up popular classics including steak and burgers, announced earlier this year that it would be shutting down.
Parent company Whitbread says the move is part of a five-year plan that will see the firm achieve £250million in cost reductions. Beefeater fans now have until September 10 to say their goodbyes to the beloved chain.
A letter to Beefeater reward club members, reported by The Sun, confirmed the news.
It read: “As you may have seen, we have recently announced changes to our business, which is resulting in the closure of our branded restaurants.
“This means that on Thursday, September 10, 2026, your local Beefeater and all other UK Beefeaters will close.”
The move will also see the Brewers Fayre and Bar + Block brands vanish.
Earlier this year Whitbread’s boss Dominic Paul said the company was forced into the move due to “significant cost increases”, blaming then-Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ National Insurance and business rates hike.
He said: “We plan to convert all our remaining branded restaurants to an integrated food and beverage offer that is preferred by our hotel guests and will unlock the addition of more highly profitable extension rooms.
“Our continued efforts to drive our commercial plan and efficiencies will extend our market-leading position and allow us to take share from our competitors, many of which are struggling to grow.”
The restaurants, which are usually in or near Premier Inn, also run by Whitbread, first opened more than 50 years ago.
A spokesperson previously said: “As a business which recruits around 15,000 people every year, we expect to be able to retain a significant proportion of those affected and will be looking to redeploy as many of our impacted colleagues as possible.”
