Since opening last weekend, Jackson’s monthly listeners have climbed by 5 million on Spotify from just over 68 million to 73 million. Meanwhile, Michael has smashed box-office records with $217.4 million worldwide, making the film the biggest opening for a biopic of all time. The previous record holder was Oppenheimer’s $180.4 million in 2023, and before that, Bohemian Rhapsody’s $124 million in 2018.
The Freddie Mercury movie ended its global run on $910 million, while the Christopher Nolan epic finished on the current biopic total box office record of $975 million. Considering Michael hasn’t even opened in Japan yet (where there is a huge MJ fandom), we’d be very surprising if the King of Pop’s biopic didn’t cross the $1 billion mark. And given there’s at least one sequel in the works (Michael concluded in 1988, five years before the first allegations), there’s plenty more money for the estate to cash in on.
Michael is out now in cinemas.
