Whether you’re a history buff wanting to learn more about the Second World War or simply love to see some action on screen, this series continues to captivate audiences with its ‘intense’ scenes of young men at war.

Based on a 2007 book by historian Donald L. L.Miller, this nine-episode series brings his story to life in what is already a well-researched and detailed account of the real-life events.

To write the book, the biographer drew from interviews, oral histories, and other archives to ensure the story was a true, authoritative account of the USAAF bomber crews.

Masters of the Air is the 2024 adaptation series of this very book, following the action of the famed 100th Bomb Group, a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bomber unit working across East England during World War II.

The series follows two successful predecessors, also covering Miller’s war stories, and is the third instalment of these series. Band of Brothers, released in 2011, and The Pacific, in 2010, were the two other hugely successful series, both aired on HBO, unlike the third, streaming on Apple TV.

At the very heart of this series is a stellar cast, who, when the series was being filmed in 2021, were arguably far less notable, but upon its release in 2024, they’ve enjoyed huge careers. Bringing the story to life are Callum Turner, Austin Butler, Barry Keoghan, Anthony Boyle and Nate Mann.

One fan of the show left a review on Rotten Tomatoes, making note of one of these powerful performances. They wrote: “Absolutely loved this series. It has all the excitement someone who enjoys historical action films and/or war films would like.

“But a real standout for me was the performance of Callum Turner as ‘Buck’. We need to see more of this actor. He is so talented and interesting to watch.”

Another review reads: “A heavy story, but just incredibly well-crafted. Beautiful chemistry between all the leads, and it isn’t afraid to explore the cost of war on the young men that were sent into the breech.

“Incredible score, fantastic acting, beautiful cinematography, intense action, and a deeply emotional piece. highly recommend, will be rewatching.”

Viewers watch along as we see the bomb group follow bomber crews across dangerous missions, with the aim of destroying targets within a German-occupied Europe.

It’s hard not to feel empathy for the young men putting their lives on the line as the show captures the realistic dangers they face and the friendships they develop along the way.

The show struggles to fight comparisons to the other two series by the same creators, but seemingly viewers hold Master of The Air in the same high regard. One viewer shared: “Created by the same people who made Band of Brothers, you know this isn’t going to disappoint. And it sure does deliver.”

Meanwhile, a critic wrote: “Masters of Air isn’t just a good TV series; it’s an all-time great one. Easily comparable to Band of Brothers as a colossal prestige drama, the kind that we’ll look back on in another 20 years, wondering how good we had it.”

The creators of the show went on to receive three Emmy nominations for the ‘awesome’ series and went on to win ‘Outstanding Sound Mixing’ for their work with the planes, bombs and other key sound aspects of the war.

See the story come to life for yourself as all episodes of Master of the Air are streaming now on Apple TV.
