A 22-year-old Brazilian who raped a young woman on Euston Road and attempted to leave the UK shortly afterwards has been jailed. Hassan Alsarout, a Brazilian national of no fixed abode, carried out the attack in a secluded area in October of last year.
The victim reported the rape and gave a detailed account to police after the attack, in the early hours of October 9. Officers secured CCTV footage and digital evidence in the immediate aftermath of the report. Investigators identified Alsarout as the suspect and established that he had left London and travelled to the West Midlands, prompting a nationwide search.
He was eventually traced to an address in Coventry, where officers found he was planning to travel to Denmark the following day. Alsarout was arrested on October 10, 2025, less than 24 hours after the offence.
He was brought into custody, interviewed and charged within hours. He later pleaded guilty to rape at Snaresbrook Crown Court on February 20.
Evidence gathered during the investigation included digital analysis which identified a phone call made by Alsarout shortly after the attack. Investigators also found evidence that he had tried to destroy forensic material by washing his clothing soon after the offence, which further supported the case against him.
He was sentenced on Tuesday April 21, 2026 to five years and seven months in prison. He was also placed on the sex offenders register for life and will be deported from the UK following his sentence. Detective Chief Inspector Paul Ridley said the victim’s account was central to securing a conviction.

“My investigation team acted with absolute urgency to identify, locate and arrest Alsarout. Their determined efforts stopped him fleeing the United Kingdom and ensured he was brought to justice.
“This case shows the Metropolitan Police’s tireless efforts to tackle violence against women and girls through a proactive approach that puts victims first and ensures they are fully supported by specialist teams throughout.”
Specialist rape and serious sexual offence teams worked with the victim throughout the investigation. The Metropolitan Police said training has been expanded across the organisation, with more than 23,000 officers and staff having received instruction on handling such cases. The force said this has contributed to an increase in charging decisions.
